English Language Learner
Welcome
English as a Second Language
The English as a Second Language (ESL) program is designed to meet the needs of students whose primary language is not English and whose proficiency in English is limited. The goals of the program are to help students develop the linguistic and academic skills necessary to succeed in an English-speaking society, to foster the development of confidence in English Language Learners (ELLs) and to help orient students to American culture while maintaining pride in their linguistic and cultural heritages. Placement in ESL is based on multiple criteria, which include results on an English language proficiency test, standardized tests, teacher recommendation, and classroom performance. Instruction is provided in small group settings by an ESL certified teacher.
